With its Eames chairs, white flagstone walls and African masks, Sugar goes for a chic, Brady Bunch-meets-tiki-lounge look—though the hip-hop on the sound system clashes with the décor. Down a flight of stairs lies a more intimate, parquet-walled lounge with brown leather banquettes and a smaller service bar. Now that word is out about the downstairs space—where a D.J. spins on weekend nights—this chic retro scene is starting to find its following among TriBeCa's after-work bar-hoppers.

Sugar is a fabulous place. They remember your name, take care of their friends, and make wonderful drinks. Foe guys, there are a lot of pretty girls with good lighting, for girls, have your guy take you there and it will be romantic, or go alone and be one of the pretty girls.

Accosted by the scary hostess ...

Completely over capacity, I wasn't inside 5 minutes before 10 drinks were dropped on me & trampled by crowds of scenesters. I order a (flat) vodka/soda & made my way over to a table. A nanosecond passes when I'm approached by 2 employees informing me about the bottle service. Cool. Fine. I discuss this w/ my party - & the hostess grabs my arm (oh, yes)& tells me that I can't sit there - b/c apparently I look like I can't afford to be there. So-I decide my business & 30% tip will go elsewhere. I make a joke to a friend about how ironic it is that Sugar has no problem filling the club past fire codes - but it takes a nanosecond for them to ensure their tables stay empty. Prioritization is key! Well, our lovely hostess is eavesdropping on us. But, not well enough to see that I’m kidding & barges up to me, proceeding to rip my head off. Apparently service isn't a strong point at Sugar. I’ve worked in hospitality for years & have never seen outright disrespect quite like this. Luckily, a fellow unhappy patron pointed me in the direction of a friendlier venue.
