Jazz—in its many international incarnations—and world music keep beat at this tidy brick-walled Village club. Two dozen or so small tables cluster around the stage, bringing listeners close enough to chat up the band members between sets or feel the floor trembling when the conga drummers heat up. The club's name pays homage to venerated jazz venue Sweet Basil, which occupied the same address from the 1970s until 2000 and hosted luminaries such as pianist Gil Evans and drummer Art Blakey. The current incarnation continues to draw big names, including veteran trombonist Curtis Fuller and contemporary clarinetist Don Byron, while also providing an outlet for up-and-comers. On Monday nights, the spotlight shines on New School University ensembles and student-led groups.
Live MusicDaily, generally with shows at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., plus a midnight show Fri.–Sat.
Note
$10-$25 cover, plus a $10 drink minimum (cover is waived on Mondays for those with student IDs)
