During the first half of 2000, Sweet & Vicious functioned like a dating service for dot-commers; nary a week went by without the space hosting some sort of new media-sponsored event. Fortunately, its smart and smartly dressed clientele kept partying even after being pink-slipped. Low wooden benches, rather than cluttering couches, line the walls, leaving ample room for group standing and schmoozing. A trellised back garden—one of the city's prettiest—has plenty of candlelit nooks for more intimate encounters. The world-beat techno is played at just the right volume to enhance your conversation, whether the subject is business, pleasure or both.

Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
