The main level of what was once Velvet Lounge is now Tai, a restaurant specializing in the eponymous cuisine. Come weekend, however, there’s an energetic lounge scene, when a variety of DJs fuel the late-night party. The crowd consists mainly of neighborhood professionals who don't feel like going too far a field for the latest nightlife trend, as well as groups who came for a late dinner and decided to stay and sample the exotic specialty cocktail menu. Try the Tai Cooler, a downable mix of Stoli raspberry, lemonade, and cranberry juice. The space, which features high ceilings, deep red walls, and original photography, is comfortable and lived-in—and allows for more relaxed mingling than at some of the city's sleeker spots. Upstairs, you’ll now find the Velvet Lounge, which is reserved for private parties. With soft, flattering lighting, vintage-looking furniture, and space for a small band or DJ, it's a lot like an enormous living room in the apartment you wish you could afford, and with a kitchen that turns out party-sized platters of Thai appetizers like Gai Satay.
