The Temple of Ankh preserves the classic hookah bar trappings while mixing in a few modern twists. The décor is exactly what it should be: red walls, a few eponymous ankhs, blankets thrown over a low-slung couch, and a black and white photo of an ancient Pharaoh, staring down in judgment. The tobacco flavors are all old standbys: apple, cherry, peach, and other blends of fruits. There are, however, a few specialty blends, with names like Suck It, Lick It, Joint, Booty Call, and other sobriquets that we’re not allowed to print. These signature blends replace the hookah water with milkshakes, sodas, juices, and other liquids, cooling and flavoring the smoke (the menu doesn’t do a terrific job explaining what those naughty names mean, so make sure to ask). There’s a busy schedule of events here, including movie nights, belly dancing, and DJs spinning house, hip-hop, and Egyptian pop. There’s even a menu featuring classic Middle Eastern fare—hummus, gyros, falafels, etc. The crowd tends to be some local folk and some weekenders cruising the LES, each looking to be the chicest sheik in town.
