For home-style Irish charm and perfectly poured Guinness to boot, bypass Midtown’s McWannabes for this outpost of rural green on
Second Avenue. A cozy, bi-level pub with a bright red door, two dark wood bars and four working fireplaces, Thady Con’s looks like it could have been modeled after a spread in ‘Emerald Town & Country,’ if not for the trite Guinness ad repros lining its muted brown walls. With its antique stoneware and weathered wooden tables, the restaurant in the back makes for a convincing rural cottage; here, after-work regulars and late-night revelers fill up on Irish grub like cocktail sausages with Chitpole mayo ($7.95) and Shepherd’s pie ($10.95) while enjoying a healthy selection of Irish brews from the bar. There is no need for a jukebox, as live country blues, bossa nova and traditional Irish bands play from a tight corner five nights a week. Things can get harried if folks decide to jig, and Thady’s has been known to cancel acts when the floor gets too crowded. Thankfully, there’s a more mellow upstairs lounge to continue your candlelit conversation and keep up the semblance of country peace-n-quiet. — Erin Kandel

When the bands aren’t jammin’, pop culture eggheads head to Thady Con’s for their widely-popular Quiz Night, held once a week.
