Beer Garden is, well, not a beer garden—owner Jerry Poyntz named it in tribute to his Aunt Lil’, who’d use the term indiscriminately for any old drinking establishment. And this Meiers Corner mainstay is a bit like any old neighborhood pub, where a late-twenties to early-thirties familial crowd of teachers and off-duty firefighters trade stories about their workdays. There are twelve overhead TVs equipped with Direct TV sports and lotto tickets sold at the bar, near where local bands with unfortunate monikers—Driven Blind, Bionic Twitch, the Krisp—play live on the weekends. A waiter-serviced dining area in the back is chockablock with framed jerseys and towering bar-league baseball trophies—but the kitchen is no joke. Sure, you’ll find bar burgers and wings, but there are also a ridiculous number of Italian specialties, and they’re all delicious.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
