“I really like the Irish Rover,” Shane MacGowan once told the Irish Voice, “but I gather it’s moved.” It hasn’t. His signed photographs on the wall testify that he used to locate this one-room, wood-paneled pub—where the light seems to come from the booze signs alone—without issue. MacGowan’s endorsement should also be a flashing come-hither sign to anyone who prefers to overindulge; mostly a largely beefy collection of neighborhood types who never seem to come or go but are just there, lodged on the bar or hovering around one of the satellite tables. The beer is cheap and includes decent non-Irish selections such as Goose Island, although the much-ballyhooed third-drink’s-on-us policy applies to regulars only, according to a bartender. Fortunately, joining that club shouldn’t be too hard: You can do it by drinking to excess, joining the regulars on a sky-diving excursion (seriously), or doing both simultaneously, which should get everyone’s respect.
