Beverage consultants Paul Tanguay and Tad Carducci—aka The Tippling Brothers—have set up a permanent shop underground in the bowels of The Chelsea Market. The space is a familiar play on the ongoing trend harkening back to a bygone era: brick archways and cast-iron fixtures, oriental rugs and playful Sistine Chapel knockoffs point their way across the cavernous ceiling. As expected, the menu is similarly “old-timey” with its pickle plates and witty cocktail list. Sure, the clientele may not be as hip as in some nearby Meatpacking venues, but they’re certainly enjoying themselves (which should count for something); and with choices such as The Crippler (Rye, “overproof rhum,” bbq bitters) or The Screaming Greenie (one of a number of the signature frozen “Lushies”), even a card-carrying member of the trend police should be able to squeak out a few good hours.
