Located in the financial district, underneath a large apartment complex and next door to a Burger King, T.J. Byrnes is an Irish pub that’s a bit tacky, but still well-meaning. Its wood-paneled and hunter-green walls are dotted with framed pictures of good olde Eire, but its full collection of St. Patty’s Day tchotchkes are kept behind the bar: marvel at an oversize, shiny green shamrock, teddy bears in novelty T-shirts, and a leprechaun garden gnome. Some of the old-timey touches are charming—there’s a still-working vintage cash register, hanging plants in the windows, and an hors d'oeuvres buffet at 5pm (dinner time!) on weekdays. There’s also a private back room and a much larger semi-mirrored dining area, complete with giant American and Irish flags hanging on the walls.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
