Trying admirably to exude an aura of Deco luxe, this impressive space at the top of the circa-1928 Beekman Tower proffers a baby grand piano, engaging little nooks, tables à deux, dramatic 360-degree views and a serious and attentive staff. Even the cocktails have integrity. Still, something's amiss. Maybe it's the muddled postmodern/neo-Deco renovation, or the Kenny G. squeaking out of the speakers. Yes, you may have a perfectly romantic nightcap (sit on the right, for the most advantageous views), and things pick up on the weekends when a pianist starts tickling the ivories around 8pm, but the Top of the Tower is nevertheless not at the top of its game. — Angela Voulangas
