Profile

This venue is closed.

Toro is one of those stereotypically swanky Manhattan bars where the staff is European, the clientele is fur-clad, and the DJ’s music is always loud and upbeat. The name and space pay loose homage to bullfighting: the walls are dark, rustic wood, the seats black leather, the bar surrounded by glossy, Mediterranean-blue tiles. To top it all off, two authentic matador capes are displayed in frames on the back wall. Bullfighting is a tradition found also in the South of France, where the inspiration for much of the drink menu comes. Cocktails like the Matador (Hendricks Gin, St. Germaine, and mottled fresh grapes) sit aside beverage staples like prosecco and top shelf liquor. Prices are par for the downtown hotspot course with cocktails running between thirteen and fourteen bucks a pop. Before eleven on a recent Friday night, the crowd was rather anemic, but things started jumping around midnight.
