Despite its chichi location, Tribeca Rock Club is utterly lacking in pretension. In fact, it feels more like a low-key Southern haunt than a traditional Manhattan music venue. A dimly lit, narrow stretch of bar offers a respectable drinking area, while the small, main stage hosts a diverse lineup of acts. While the emphasis is on New Orleans funk and blues, shows run the gamut from Grateful Dead cover bands to '70s glam to acoustic folk. The crowd is as eclectic as the music: aging hippies, the Iron Maiden T-shirt wearing set, and the odd hipster. Ticket prices are moderate, usually falling in the $8-$20 range. And while some patrons bellyache that the liquor prices are too high for the dive setting (beers run $5-$6; mixed drinks, $7-$9), no one complains about club's small size. Stand anywhere and you'll invariably be near the stage. Loyal fans appreciate the chance to be within an arm's reach of a favorite singer.
