With display cases of Mexican folk artifacts contrasting with dark wood paneling and sumptuous leather chairs, Under the Volcano looks something like a men's club decorated by Frida Kahlo. The patrons are a loud-talking, confidently jovial bunch, hailing mainly from nearby office buildings; they loosen their ties long before they order their second round. The house poison is tequila, with nineteen varieties priced from $8 to $30 per shot; and yes, the margaritas are fantastic, whether traditional or frozen (raspberry only). Befitting the clubby furnishings, respectable selections of gin and whiskey are featured as well.

Under the Volcano's namesake is a novel by Malcolm Lowry—later adapted for the screen by John Huston—about an angst-ridden, alcoholic diplomat living in Mexico on the eve of World War II.
