The Village Lantern is an inviting and conveniently located bar situated in the middle of Bleecker Street, the bustling West Village drag that is constantly chock-a-block with NYU students, nostalgia-driven tourists and boisterous sports fans. But the rest of the week, life at the Village Lantern is much more laid-back, with nightly drink specials and above-average pub fare along with music, friendly, competent service from girl-next-door-pretty barmaids , and ESPN on television. The crowd can get eclectic: Exposed-brick walls and flickering votive candles lure in the occasional upscale couple seeking respite from the beery dives and head shops that line Bleecker Street. And on weekends, everything gets louder and younger when a DJ spins party-girl favorites in the back. But for the most part, the Village Lantern is a great example of a mellow neighborhood hang that knows it’s not necessary to embrace dive-bar squalor to keep things real.
