The bird is the word at Waikiki Wally’s, a kitschy tropical paradise complete with lush palm trees and pretty girls in sarongs and grass skirts. The proprietors know their theme bars—they also own the gender-bending Lucky Cheng’s. But what will really get you lei-ed at this East Village tiki temple are the cocktails, especially when they arrive in super-sized scorpion bowls. The thatched bar excels at frozen grogs like the pina colada: served rum-soaked and garnished with a fresh pineapple spear, it’s an intoxicating version of the classic cooler. The Maui-inspired martinis are hit and miss, but the liquor’s never lacking. True to its name, the Wipe Out is a tidal wave of alcohol, including Alizé and dark and light rums; it just might knock you off your barstool.
