Overlooking the West Side Highway, West is both out of the way and worth the trek. Stacked slate and stone walls surround a slate bar where bartenders spend time squeezing and juicing for their delectable libations such as the blood orange margaritas and the fresh watermelon martinis. There's also an impressive beer collection, with 20 varieties available by the bottle and 10 on tap: the kind of hard-to-find German and Belgian brands that cause beer geeks to swoon. On Fridays and Saturdays DJs spin beginning at 9pm; during the winter, local filmmakers often screen movies. But West's real draw is its breathtaking wall of windows providing a panoramic view of the Hudson River and the Jersey City skyline. While the seductive candlelit lounge suggests a late-night date millieu, the sight of a sunset and the happy-hour specials make a pretty strong case for heading over straight from work.
