Profile

At the 79th Street Boat Basin, the view's the thing—especially the view of the sun as it gorgeously sinks behind the Palisades every clear night. This is the Upper West Side's unofficial summer HQ, full of grill smoke and dogs on leashes and babies in carriages. It's loud, and the food is basic barbecue. But it's a great neighborhood resource and deserves a lease in perpetuity.

Boring postcollegiate meatmarket's a waste of a beautiful space

On each of the rare occasions I've gone to the 79StBB, there's a Tufts, Brandeis, or Syracuse reunion in full swing: guys in "office casual" and girls in pastel dresses desperately schmoozing each other. There's cheap beer in plastic cups... woo-ee. This is like a dull end-of-school frasority BBQ. You WILL go home discolored by the inescapable, respiratory-system-clogging gritty smoke. Too bad this cool space with its weird faux-classical pillars is home to such a consistently dull scene. Maybe someday it'll get better.

My only wintertime regret

I love this place during the Summer. It's such a lovely 'escape' from the city on a Saturday morning or afternoon, especially when the sun is blazing and the accordionist is playing. Pooping pigeons, plastic plates, long waits and all, I will keep going back to this place when the city thaws!
