Like countless supposed NYC hot spots, White Noise is inconspicuous to passersby. Located above a liquor store on Avenue B, the bar’s only sign of life is a TV in the window showing―what else―white noise. Walk up the flight of stairs and enter the bar’s spacious, darkly red-lit and windowless room, like a basement lair, except on the second floor. With chandeliers, black curtains, and gothic leather furniture, the space appears, at first glimpse, to be the perfect watering hole for children of the 80’s who still own the Cure’s Disintegration on cassette. But then you here Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and then that theory goes out the window. If the company of friends becomes too much to handle, sneak into the “Weirdo Room,” located behind a curtain, and consisting of nothing more than a chair facing a small television showing – you guessed it – white noise. Whether you drag a friend in there for some private time, take a quick nap, or just stare at the screen while zoning out to Pink Floyd, it’s all acceptable here. After all, it is a rock and roll bar.
