Whether or not you have the Great American Novel in your head, you can still get blasted at this nostalgic high temple of the Alcoholic Artist. The scene today is characterized less by sailors, workers and bohemian writers (like Dylan Thomas, a regular back in the day, whose portrait hangs on just about every wall of the place) than by a mix of locals, NYU students and tourists, but the surroundings haven't changed much. After a dozen whiskies or so (legend has it that Dylan's record was eighteen), you might even indulge the fantasy that you can afford to write poetry, live here in the West Village and still have money left over to drink. (Oh, by the way, those eighteen drams killed Thomas the next morning.) — Andrew Yamato

I want to like Whitehorse. Unfortunately, the staff make that impossible. I arrived last night to have a drink- all but one table in the bar area was open, and there was no waitress to be seen. I ordered a drink, and proceeded to sit down at one of 6 empty tables, and was promptly told to remove myself.
Wanting to sit, my friend and I proceeded outdoors to sit on one of the 10 empty benches, only to be told the outside was closed. We returned indoors and requested more information from the waitress, who was busy watching baseball, as to why we could not sit if the place was empty, "It's policy. It's not my policy".
Employees should be impowered to make decisions regarding the comfort of their customers. I think I'm less of a bother sitting down than standing up in the middle of the bar.
White Horse - terrible service

The White Horse came recommended as a famous pub. However, the experience is poor. We went there last night. It's packed in the main bar, everyone barging into you. You get told (rudely) you cannot stand in the side room because you can only buy drinks from the waitresses. You can't be outside with more than 3 friends ("a big group" according to the surly bouncer) or you get asked to leave. If you mistakenly buy a drink at the bar and take it outside, the waitresses, who only care about their lousy tips, tell you off. Terrible customer service all round. Not worth going to, even for the name.
