An inviting meeting ground for drinkers of different stripes, The Wine Gallery has enough of a selection to appease grape geeks without souring more casual imbibers. Over 30 wines are on the rotating menu, which ranges from familiar domestic and Australian picks to South African and Russian reds. The wine-curious can start off with one of four flights, while the wine-averse can stick with safety drinks like cocktails and beer. The small room is washed in red light from overhead. ("I think everybody looks good in it," says owner Irene Georgiades.) Personable, handmade touches give the space a homey feel: Georgiades—who owned the Gallery's first incarnation two blocks away from 1972 to 1994, before reopening here in 1996—painted the walls herself in a frenetic mix of maroon and black dabs, and made the collages of cigar rings and magazine clippings set into the tabletops. The antique stained-glass panels under the glass-top bar used to be room dividers in her own home. Heightening the just-like-home feel is a practice of allowing patrons to bring their own CDs for the stereo.
