Profile

Check the blackboard outside to see who’s playing then descend the stairs to this basement, bohemian-style jazz spot. Squeeze in at the bar or cocktail tables and crane your neck the length of this narrow space, past the old French and Italian liquor posters that line the brick walls, to catch sight of the band wedged in the tiny, quartet-sized corner stage. The radiating character of the front room and the quiet and private back room lounge give Zinc a romantic, first-date atmosphere. The standard $7 cover to get in and two-drink minimum at the tables, plus late-night hours (till 3:30 in the morning on weekends), offers more reasons to linger. Though bebop artists like Roy Hargrove have passed through here, Zinc Bar is committed to jazz and world music from all over the globe. Latin Thursdays, African Fridays, Bossa Nova Saturdays and Samba Sundays ensure that each night is unique. Mean mojitos and caiprinhas, and to stake a claim to a seat before the regulars settle in.

Extra

That big bowl of limes on the tiny bar is there for a reason: The bartenders here concoct killer mojitos.

I went to Zinc Bar with 3 friends the other night. We sat in the back room and had some drinks. I have no complaints about the service or the drinks or the music. My complaint is about how they automatically place a gratuity on your drink tab without telling you so. I only noticed the next day that on the bottom of the receipt it appears as this: GRATUITY NOT INCLUDED ***on groups of 3 or less*** It was my fault that I did not look at the receipt more carefully and basically double-tipped, but I have not had this experience at a bar where only drinks are served. I think this is a deceptive practice on their part.

greatest jazz bar

The zinc bar is hands down the greatest true jazz bar in this city that purports to be the epicenter of the art form. It is a magnetic spot that draws listeners and musicians from all walks, and melds them together in a space that is so intimate you can reach out and touch the conga player. This makes for musical moments where true improvisation takes place, not the formula jazz heard elsewhere. This is not to mention the late night appearances of luminaries, as well as a tremendously human ambience. The drinks are excellent, the cover more than reasonable, and the staff enjoyable. Go nowhere else for the real thing.
