Profile

This cheery indoor beer garden may not quite conjure the Bavarian Alps, but it's still a welcome respite from the claustrophobic Sturm und Drang of so many East Village booze parlors. The long tables and bench seating are especially suited to large groups; bowls of big pretzels are regularly refreshed; and the menu, though limited, nevertheless offers all three of the German dishes you've heard of. And of course, the beer: 13 tasty Teutonic brews are on tap, served in sturdy steins that encourage enthusiastic toasts (and you'll know you're in the full spirit of the place when you find yourself making them often).

Bad waitress attitude and ok food

I had the same experience as a previous reviewer. I met a group of friends at Zum Schneider around Oktoberfest thinking it would be fun. Granted, it was super crowded but still the waitress was ridiculously rude. I've worked as a waitress and tend to have complete sympathy for them considering all the stuff they have to deal with (kitchen staff being slow etc) but this was the first time that I was ready to call the manager over. The food was ok but SUPER overpriced (ok, granted it was Oktoberfest) but the waitress was unabashedly rude. Surprise, surprise the tip was included in the bill. Frankly, I think Heidelberg on the upper east side was WAY better atmosphere, better food, better pricing and the waitresses treat you like human beings.

Good beer, rudest waitress in NY.

Came for a friend's birthday with a party of 6 and sat at a table. Waitress with glasses gave us a difficult time because we weren't buying meals. She kicked 3 people off the table next to us because they were only drinking, and not eating. We bought finger food and beers that came out to a $200 tab. She gave us a dirty look and was absolutely rude to us the whole time. She ended up adding gratuity to our check of course given her lousy attitude. I have no idea how this lady is employed as a waitress at a bar in NYC. On the plus side, the beer was good as you would expect from German beer but never coming here ever again. If you want a good beer garden experience, I'd recommend Astoria.
