Profile

This dual-personality lair on the Hotel Gansevoort’s lower level caters to hotel guests and locals with a beauty spa that morphs into a VIP hot spot after 10 p.m. The nighttime lounge has a notoriously tight door, so curious civilians are advised to scope out the place by day. The mod, Robert D. Henry–designed space, sleek with sliding teak doors, shiny scarlet glass, and Italian marble, plays off the frantically sceney neighborhood’s not-too-distant industrial past with exposed ceiling ducts and rough white concrete-plastered walls. By day, aestheticians customize 45-minute Fitness Facial regimens inside three red-lit compartments; peddled as the epidermal version of personal training, weekly sessions conducted with Sonya Dakar products are calibrated to shape up skin. To the lulling gurgle of nearby hydrotherapy pools, therapists multitask, loosening clients’ skin by steaming, smoothing on exfoliating linseed scrubs, then massaging necks and shoulders while cardamom-enzyme peels are left to set. Most spa treatments, like the signature hot-stone massage, can also be administered in the hotel’s luxe guest suites—a popular option with the boldface names that frequent the Gansevoort—or, better yet, in the wind-ruffled private cabana on the building’s glorious roof. In-room cut and styling is also available from Hiro Haraguchi, who has a three-chair satellite salon just past the spa’s laser-lit steam room.
