Profile

Those in need of a rock and roll makeover or just something fun, funky, and totally different need look no further than Mudhoney, three city salons named after a cult-classic Russ Meyer movie. The original location, on Sullivan Street, is pure Goth with faux leopard-print chairs and a skull motif, while the Noho and Nolita salons—inside the chic Bond 07 and Selima Optique boutiques, respectively—are more opulent and offer a greater menu of treatments, including high-tech Asian straightening and reconditioning treatments performed by experienced stylists from Japan. All three salons specialize in short precision cuts, bold color, and long-lasting hair extensions, and boast a vibe that’s similarly no-nonsense: Stylists typically wear distressed jeans and vintage tees, and use the Osis line of products, which have names like Mess Up, Stick Up, and Grip. No one will pressure you to get a Mohawk or to go platinum blonde, but if you’ve dreamed of rocking a style worthy of a CD cover, this is the place to go for it. The salons are cash only, but both haircuts and highlights are typically under $150 each.
