In 2006, after a decade grooming J Lo and Katie Couric in his Fifth Avenue location, high-profile hairdresser (and Vidal Sassoon protégé) Riccardo Maggiore relocated to a large, bright space above bustling Lexington Avenue. Customers tend to the monied mature who appreciate the gracious offer of cappuccino or iced tea when they step into the wood-accented, Tuscan-style studio. Minimal advertising and a third floor location means little walk-in traffic—good news for those weary of the long waits linked with big-name salons. After a bliss-inducing shampoo complete with head massage, the charming, curly-haired Maggiore performs his signature wet cut with the client standing up in front of a large mirror, followed by hairbrush blowdry and style. His staff of 25 stylists and three estheticians also administer corrective color therapy to bleached-out tresses, Barex shock treatment to condition the driest dreadlocks, and facials and manicures to a rainbow of willing faces and hands.
Extra
Models are invited to the salon, Tue., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. for discounted styling and coloring, and possible Wednesday evening photo shoots.
Bridal
The staff at this Vidal Sasson protégé’s salon will help calm jitters with cups of tea during the appointment. If you’re apprehensive about choosing a style, fear not: Maggiore photographs the trials so brides can assess various looks before committing to one. Trials are $150 to $500. Day-of hairstyles run $250 to $500.
