Four colorists, six stylists, and one manicurist make up the staff at this Flatiron salon, which is one of the few that’s open on Mondays. Owner Hiroshi Kawanishi, who’s logged over three decades in the biz, has kept his space airy and Zen-like, with mahogany wood paneling, subtly colored lighting, and dark wood floors. Aside from a basic mani-pedi and a few waxing services, 02’s concentration is on hair: styling, coloring, and results-oriented treatments like chemical retexturizing, Japanese straightening, and deep conditioning. The salon also offers a Japanese hair repair and moisturizing service—a three-step process that consists of a moisturizer, sealer, and cuticle conditioner—that’s available at different price points; these range from around $35 for a Quick Moisture boost to the triple digits for the total treatment, which includes a month's supply of conditioner. The salon employs something they call the “3R” robe system, used to indicate a client’s time constraints: A silver robe means services will be performed as quickly as possible; mocha-clad customers enjoy a relaxing head massage; and a blue robe gets you slippers, a head and shoulder massage, and time to relax. Ten hair-care lines, including Phyto and Créde, are available for purchase.
