AK Salon sits snugly among vintage shops, tattoo parlors, and tiny cafés on this prototypical East Village block. Aside from the crystal chandelier and some exotic flower arrangements in the window, this subterranean parlor abstains from ostentatious pretenses: Its white brick walls, hardwood floors, and chrome-and-black-leather furnishings are as cool as the incessant jazz soundtrack. AK (named after the owner’s wife) has only three chairs, one for each of its internationally trained Japanese stylists. This multitalented trio is equally skilled in cuts, highlights, single-process coloring, Japanese straightening, and deep-conditioning treatments. Each appointment begins with an assessment of hair type, face shape, and grooming habits to determine the best do. Though the salon does have a substantial Asian following, the majority of clients cross cultures—basically young Manhattanite drawn to the reasonable prices, quality services, and evening hours. Redkin and Milbon are the products of choice. Some are available for purchase.
