Alice’s Hair Care is the kind of place where, at almost a moment’s notice, you can drop in with a headful of botched, self-dyed black hair and be welcomed with open arms—no rolling of the eyes, no condescending I-told-you-so speech or barely suppressed laughter among the staff. Perhaps for this very reason, Alice’s has built a loyal following for repairing at-home color gone bad. The cozy, butter-hued space hosts only a handful of chairs, separated by gunmetal beaded curtains. Unlike other, more posh salons in the area, this neighborhood standby has found its place among preppy Upper East Siders who may have a kid or two in tow. Apart from corrective color, clients rely on the salon’s short, neatly coiffed bobs and long-layered looks—but nothing too outrageous or über-trendy. Frizzy, naturally curly hair gets a good taming here, not by chemical straightening treatments, but rather super-smooth blow dries and curl-embracing style techniques, aided by the arsenal of Bumble and bumble products the salon sells. Summer weekends are consumed largely by bridal parties and prom-goers sitting for sculptural updos. And yes, there is an Alice: A veteran of uptown salons, she decided to open her own hair wonderland in 2002.
