Bigwigs at City Hall have been crossing the street to this classic barbershop since Fiorello LaGuardia held office in the thirties. With its twin candy-stripe barber poles and traditional leather chairs, the shop certainly looks the part, and even the five barbers on staff (the weathered sign outside reads “5 BARBERS, NO WAITING”) are perfectly cast for their roles, with traditional white coats and distinct accents from across Europe and Russia. The store has changed hands over the years, but the current proprietress, charming Antonella, has been wielding her scissors at the helm since 1985; images of the latest mayors to grace her chair—Bloomberg and Giuliani—smile down on customers from their autographed frames above the door. Open at 6:30 a.m. every weekday (later on weekends), Antonella’s is a regular early-morning stop among policemen at One Police Plaza, as well as the Wall Street crowd. The cut and wash includes a relaxing shoulder rub, the old-fashioned hot-towel shave features a face massage, and quick touch-ups are always available for those in a rush. For women, cuts, highlights, and threading (for eyebrows and unwanted facial hair) are also available.
Indoor surfing, spinning lovefests, a luxurious pig-placenta facial, and more.
