Aqua Vitae prides itself on being a medi-spa that uses technology to nourish and beautify its clientele. Owner and senior esthetician Isabel Sutherland spent twelve years as a medical assistant in Switzerland perfecting her skills, which she has since passed on to her highly trained team. Today, overworked Wall-Streeters and jet-lagged celebrities stop by her Upper East Side space for sessions on the “crystal bed,” the only model of its kind in the city. During the 60-to-95-minute treatment, patients lie on an ergonomically designed bed while heated jade and volcanic stones move slowly along the spine, resulting in opened chakras, improved circulation, relief of muscular pain and stress, and the feeling that you’ve just emerged from a solid eight-hour slumber. (Sutherland believes in it so much that she personally logs an hour a day on it). The interior of Aqua Vitae is as elemental as the treatments, but customer comfort is top priority, whether during one of the high-tech facials or the numerous detoxifying body wraps. Aqua is also expert in body-hair removal by sugaring, which uses a less painful natural paste that, unlike conventional wax, contains no resin, chemicals, or additives.
