If you're lucky, you have a friendly neighborhood salon and day spa; in the West Village, that spa is Avalon. From the street, Avalon looks like a regular, busy hair salon: eight cutting stations, a reception area with refreshments, stylists gesticulating wildly, clients in black robes browsing the large selection of candles and cosmetic products (from Kerastase, Aveda, and Decléor). Once clients enter, however, the welcomingly spacious spot gives way to even more cutting chairs, color rooms, manicure and pedicure stations, waxing and hair removal rooms, and a UVB & UVA Plexiglas tanning bed. In the spa, clients enjoy a full range of facial, body, and massage treatments. The mostly male masseurs use a combination of Swedish, deep tissue, and shiatsu techniques which they adapt to meet clients' needs. Estheticians use Decléor products for many of their facial and body treatments, which come in varying degrees of intensity for all kinds of skin. Avalon also provides hot stone massage and Reiki treatments, and the Special Package section on the menu is a particularly good bang for your buck.
