The following is literally underground at this tiny basement shop surrounded by the jewelry kiosks of the diamond district. It seems impossible, with such an obscure location, that this operation could survive the metrosexual explosion, but since 1982, Best Barbershop has been serving a steady stream of guys who want traditional scissor cuts and razor shaves for which ear- and nose-hair trims are givens. But just because the prices are cheap, doesn’t mean the clients are: On a recent afternoon, we spied the $200K-watch-wearing hip-hop jeweler Lex Diamond and a modest knight from England both tilted back in the sturdy leather chairs as they enjoyed a Royal Shave complete with hot towel and an electric neck massage.
