First-time Brownberry clients may be a bit taken aback by this intimate tanning salon’s location: Instead of entering a frenetic, fluorescent-lit space, they’re welcomed into Meredith Fish’s home, a spotless apartment with chocolate accent walls, a coffee-toned leather couch, and the delicate scent of a woodsy Diptyque candle. A bronzed reflection of her young, professional clientele, Fish greets visitors with a cold bottle of water or refreshing iced tea, then, after discussing the desired tan level (choices range from sweetly sun-kissed to St. Tropez bronzed) gets to customizing the spray solution. The Brownberry formula is colorless and odorless (although some have cited a subtle “grape-nut scent”); made from an all-natural mixture of aloe and the active bronzing ingredient, DHA, that doesn’t stain clothing or sheets. (Since Fish herself has sensitive skin, the formula is also oil-free.) Once clients have disrobed and are standing ready on the combination of bath mats and black theater curtains spread over the honey-stained wood floors, Fish sprays the luminous emulsion across the legs, arms, stomach, and back. Twenty minutes later, they’re left with an even, all-over glow.
