A vast gallery-like space showcases iconic American fashion designer Calvin Klein's definably anti-frou-frou couture. Below the looming white walls--adorned in an ever-changing array of artwork--hang the simple lines of Klein's signature suitings, wardrobe staples in timeless styles that don't change drastically from season to season. Jeans, shoes and undies- three of the company's strongest offerings, are displayed on glass shelves. PETA-philes, stand warned: In recent years, Klein's built a rep for leather coats, skirts and bags, in exotic skins like lizard and python. It's all a long way from the 70s, when the designer focused squarely on everyday Americana like jeans and T-shirts (before that, he was in the coat business). Even though the clothing's on display, customers just can't pick items off the rack, or shelf: Instead, you request a try-on, and the black-clad sales staff scurries (or sometimes saunters) to a storeroom and returns with your size. Venture beyond fashion to the lower level, home to a notable and remarkably large housewares department, which encompasses everything from basic sheets and towels to specialty items like elaborate sushi sets, silver baby rattles, and rugs.
