There are no Madison Avenue prices and there’s no Madison Avenue attitude at Christopher Stanley, the namesake salon of colorist Christopher Gamper and stylist Stanley (one-name only), both formerly of the Antonio Prieto Salon. Instead, this simple white box of a salon in Chelsea exudes an eagerness to please. Appointments run on time to the minute, anyone with free hands is expected to take your coat and get you a coffee, and four of the ten stylists do both cuts and color. The salon also refuses to carry one haircare line exclusively, preferring to use their favorite products from brands like Goldwell, Deva Curl, Palvin-Bid, and Ecru New York. According to Stanley, the typical client here is a professional woman who wants to look “current but not crazy,” and the credo is to do serious work in a relaxed environment. Every three or four months, the salon hangs up new artwork from emerging artists, and celebrates with an opening-night party that transforms the salon into a trendy after-hours lounge. These guys want to have a good time at work, and they make sure their clients do, too.
