Before Williamsburg boasted a Tasti-D-Lite and rampant chichi hair emporia, Melaina Ulino opened her full-service salon and spa in a converted warehouse space a few blocks from the river. Since 2002, Downtime has grown with the neighborhood, expanding its menu to include body wraps, mani-pedis, and airbrush tanning in addition to skin care, massage, and hair removal. Zen-inspired wooden screens divide the homey, 2,500-square-foot duplex space into various sections. Up front, Ulino, who specializes in curls, highlights, and layers, covers three hair stations. In the middle, four private rooms are reserved for bodywork and facials—using spa fave products by Dermalogica—or a manicure station for Downtime’s signature cranberry nail treatment. Waxing is done upstairs. In fine weather, savvy clients detour to the patio out back, for a mini-bask or to dry their tootsies in the sun.
