Actor Larry "Rock" Kolber added a little theater to the world of hair salons when he opened the first Dramatics NYC in 1985. Today, the Thespian spirit lives on at nine Manhattan locations. Stylists go by stage names like Lexus, Matrix, and Vogue; and for a fee, customers can star in a DVD chronicling their entire makeover process. The salon counts at least one superstar among its alumni—former hair assistant Mariah Carey—and its playful approach has occasionally managed to attract celebrity clients like Julia Roberts and Rita Wilson. Regardless of your placement on the marquee, every makeover client gets a consultation with the Star Treatment Transformation Team who recommend which protein treatment, cut, color, and makeup application will be most flattering. (At some locations, procedures extend to skin care and tanning.) Although outside brands like L'Oréal and Wella are sometimes used on-site, this mini-chain favors its own line of hair care products, all featuring thematically appropriate names like Standing Ovation gel, Grand Finale power spray, and Daily Rehearsal conditioner.Extra
Dramatics NYC produces projects for the stage and the screen. Past works have included a live version of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Beauty Shop, a television pilot.
