In 2011, after renting out a room in a Soho office building for over a year, facialist Elena Rubin decided to strike out on her own, opening an entire wellness center just next door to her previous location. The eight-room, warmly lit, neutral-toned space, with chic, somewhat-industrial-looking light fixtures, houses nine practitioners—from a massage therapist to a Pilates instructor to a nutrition counselor—all with the same mantra as Rubin: By limiting the number of clients you take on, you’re able to fully engage with the client, and provide them with the best possible quality of service. You will never feel the hustle and bustle of a busy spa, or be rushed through a treatment—clients’ appointments are spaced out enough that you’ll never see someone leaving or coming. And while each service here is its own individual experience, there’s certainly the option to linger and mix and match, scheduling, say, a Reiki session after private Pilates.
