After honing her skills at city spas like Completely Bare and Mamie's, esthetician Kristen Haines went out on her own in 2003, setting up shop in her Upper East Side apartment and discreetly seeing regular clients out of a spare bedroom. In a screwball comedy-like twist, business began to pick up and her doorman accidentally caught wind of the scheme, forcing her to quickly look for a new—and legal—set-up. With the aid of Craigslist, Haines took over the lease to the much-beloved (now defunct) Tribeca massage studio Hands, and opened Euphoria Spa in late 2004. Exposed brick walls, lofted ceilings, and a private yoga studio create an unpretentious second-floor space that nevertheless feels right at home amongst the neighborhood's high-rent galleries and celebrity-chef outposts. Offering a complete menu of skincare, massage, and hair removal, Euphoria is best known for its Fresh Air Facial, a 10-step process designed specifically for New Yorkers’ over-stressed complexions. Local moms-on-the-go and Wall Streeters on their lunch breaks opt for quick pick-me-ups like the Javanese Floral Foot Fetish (a fruit-laden exfoliating scrub), or the m'n'm (much-needed massage), but it's the decadent Chardonnay Massage—complete with a complimentary glass of champagne—that attracts devotees from Brooklyn and New Jersey. Euphoria's small sauna is available for a quick warm-up before and/or after treatments.
