The sun doesn’t always shine in New York City, but that doesn’t stop the crew at tiny Faux Glow, a spray-tanning salon with kaleidoscope-patterned wall hangings and a minimalist, modern edge. Owner Jeani Roth subscribes to the turbine tanning technique over the insta-spray model; this means that clients stand in a pair of paper undies as the “artist” airbrushes each span and crevice with an automatic spray-gun device. Here, skilled spray-tan artists can shade the sun-kissed look—five shades are available, from Hollywood Honey to Brazilian Beauty—to add the illusion of thinner thighs, more prominent cleavage, or an impressive six-pack. The technique is favored by reformed tanning-bed addicts and brides- and bridesmaids-to-be, and the color lasts about ten days without streaking.
