With an Astroturf entryway, Christmas lights, and fluorescents overheads, owner Gale Fan’s apothecary and massage parlor is decidedly kitschy. But as anyone willing to look past the surface will discover, decor is beside the point. Around since the mid-nineties, this Chinatown spot delivers precise foot reflexology, Shiatsu, Tui-Na rubdowns and acupuncture treatments in its thirteen bare-bone rooms. Those well-versed in herbs might explore the in-house “health market”—a glass case holding over a thousand tiny boxes filled with Chinese remedies. The uninitiated, however, will want to stick to more familiar offerings—travel-sized Tiger Balm, maybe?—and leave the little containers to the experts.
