Profile

Freemans Sporting Club, in the same alley leading to the ever-hip Freemans restaurant on the Lower East Side, hopes to provide some middle ground for fashion-conscious men who want to get a haircut in a relatively manly environment. The salon is actually part barber and part stylish haberdashery—selling shirts and custom-made suits designed by co-owner Taavo Somer and stitched by Brooklyn clothier Martin Greenfield. (He’s cut suits for Bill Clinton and Mike Bloomberg.) Fashionable customers will also find Quoddy Trail moccasins and lots of upscale grooming products, like Proraso shaving cream, Geo. F. Trumper cologne, Edwin Jagger razors, D.R. Harris & Co. deodorant, Baxter of California aftershave, and American Crew pomades. Haircuts, beard trims, and shaves take place in the sunny, peaceful back room, meticulously arranged with four vintage barber seats, a worn-in leather club chair, exposed Edison bulbs, and a giant mounted bass on the wall.
