Profile

Amy Schiappa’s original four-chair Orchard Street parlor got so busy that she had to relocate to more spacious digs in late 2007, and her client base of artists, designers, and musicians has followed. Now a bustling seven-chair spot with a roster of ten stylists, Fringe’s space melds original architectural details—high tin ceilings, brick walls, ceramic tiled floors—with shiny new workstations and a rotating collection of works by local artists. Formerly an artistic director at Dop Dop and educator at Laicale, Schiappa can still be found mixing it up amid the buzz of hairdryers, gossip, vintage kitchen timers, and staff-chosen tunes, as she and her personally trained crew deliver the salon’s signature precision cuts and updated, more naturalistic interpretations of classic styles; think a sexed-up Shirley Jones, funky wedges, and (heroin-free) glam-rock coiffuring, often accompanied by the in-house favorite sculpted bang. Color products from old-school Redken and the ecofriendly Davines are in keeping with the classic-meets-modern philosophy, while to help reduce its carbon footprint, Fringe’s own line of hair-care products defers profits to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Back Away From the Scissors…

To keep creative clientele from getting too, well, creative, Fringe offers its customers free bang trims between visits.

I was so excited to visit Fringe Salon when in town from Boston. I went into Fringe worried that I was going to, once again, have someone not listen to what I wanted. But Jen was super sweet. I showed her a picture of what I had wanted and she did exactly what I wanted. I also have a friend who goes there and she had a dramatic change in her haircut last summer. I was expecting her to come back home in tears when she told me she cut off 10 inches. But it was the cutest haircut! The cutest salon! And now we both drive from Boston to New York and only let Jen do our hair. I'm so happy I found Fringe Salon!

I just had the worst haircut I've had in years at this salon. My stylist totallly disregarded my instructions and suddenly decided to cut huge sections out of the back of my hair because "it needed it." It will take six to eight months for this disaster to grow out. I think that NY Mag should have someone try all of the stylists at a salon before giving it a Critics Pick. Ugh.
