Future Tan has been bronzing West Villagers since 1997, but the salon’s former neon aesthetic has given way to a more understated hue since onetime manager Dominick Ameno turned owner in January 2006. With fifteen private rooms (in a 2,700-square-foot, bi-level space), patrons can stand or lie down for full-body, facial, and upper-body tanning sessions. The Sun Capsule Cyclone, which uses 60 220-watt lamps, gives a tropical glow in eight minutes flat, and the Mystic My Mist UV-free spray booth means an airbrushlike tan (bronzer or fragrance optional) in 40 seconds or less. Rooms are equipped with satellite radio, with complimentary water and eye protection (Wink-Ease or goggles) on hand. Clean towels, Hempz moisturizer, and hair products in a communal grooming area allow clients to re-coif before stepping back into the world, perhaps with a selection of home-tanning products, including Matahari, Swedish Beauty, California Tan, Designer Skin, and Mystic Tan line of lotions, exfoliants, and self-tanners under their well-bronzed biceps. — Sarah Walker
