Part beauty store and part salon, Georgia harbors a soft spot for the curly-haired masses. Named after co-founder Jodie Patterson’s corkscrew-curled daughter, the inviting space was designed by Christian Wassmann and Serge Becker, the creative mind behind hot spots like the Box and Bowery Bar. Worn walls are decked with brass-rimmed shelving and marble countertops, while the rear salon features a sleek, black-tiled nook for shampooing and two styling chairs. Self-described “product junkies” Patterson and sister-in-law Kiara Ellozy set up shop in 2008, catering to those with dry hair, excessive blow-dryers, swimmers, sunbathers, and chronic dyers. Carrying over 40 hard-to-find product lines, including Davines, Mixed Chicks, and Cote Bastide, the stock is split between hair-care, styling, and body-care brands. The salon employs four stylists, including one baliage colorist and one specializing in braiding, extensions, and weaves. Prices start at $150 for the salon’s precise dry cuts—stylists will straighten curls first before snipping. After serving everyone from the goth-rockers to the scenesters of the Lower East Side, the staff is particularly skilled at color correction and dramatic cut-and-dye jobs. — Lauren Murrow
I was on my way home from whole foods one night last summer when I found myself drawn in to this shop by the most amazing smell. The place is beautiful - it has a kind of deconstructed charm that instantly made me feel at home. The girls that work there were super nice and told me all about the concept behind the store and showed me the salon. Before I knew it, I had been in there for an hour, chatting up the girls and scoping out the awesome products. It was just so chill in there and it smelled sooooo good - I didn't want to leave, so I booked an appointment for a cut right then and there. Fast forward to now: I have been getting my cuts, color and blowouts at Georgia for the past 10 months and my (epically uncooperative) hair has never been so happy. The head stylist there is Yusef and he is a master. Plus they're always playing really good music when I'm there.
I went to Georgia salon and found a beautiful space and an amazing array of products that are hard to find. Everything about my experience was great - until I got my hair styled. I went in for a blow dry. After my blow dry was done, the stylist offered me a free "trim". Flash forward and 3 inches of my hair were on the floor. I was devastated. He proceeded to tell me "I needed a cut and if I didn't like it to get extensions". This was two months ago and I am still dealing with trying to grow it out. My advice: go to Georgia for products but don't go there to get your hair done.
