Raised in England and trained in Canada, Julie Ann Gordon has been practicing electrolysis in New York since 1972, and belongs to the American Electrology Association. Her small treatment room occupies part of a white-walled beauty services suite on the Upper East Side, in a building she chose for its good security system for female clients. Warm and chatty, Gordon’s consultation is not as thorough as some but she is tuned into clients’ questions and is methodical and precise in her work. After pre-applying a cream to mildly anesthetize the skin (witch hazel is dabbed on following electrolysis), the electrologist uses either a short-wave method to destroy follicles with heat or laser hair removal to zap the shaft. Most of the office’s clients are professional women, but teenagers and men are also fans of its reliable results.
