Makeup artist and hairstylist James Thomas came to Gotham from San Francisco to open this hair salon on a tree-shaded East Village block in 1998. Shabby-chic chandeliers and exposed brick fit the downtown-studio aesthetic; the salon’s single room and two workstations mean that every client has the personalized attention of the owner or a senior stylist. Using the Jason’s Organic product line for all treatments, Hair Pi attracts plenty of artists and fashionistas for its stylings and color correction. In addition to wearable razor cuts and buttery blonde highlights, Pi is also known for its mastery of the dramatic, decidedly non-organic color change. (Thomas gave one longtime client a bubblegum-pink bob.) In the community-spirit groove, Pi’s walls showcase the work of local painters and photographers, and the space often doubles as a party space for gallery openings and late-night parties.
