Profile
An out-of-tune baby grand piano serves as the front desk at Hale, a clean-air salon named for the Old English word meaning “healthy” or “wholesome.” The space is outfitted in a variety of repurposed materials: Old church pews prop up towering mirrors, nineteenth-century French doors dramatically divide the space, and 200-year-old barn wood makes up the floor boards. With a team of stylists with organic backgrounds, including Vidal Sassoon–trained cutters and a former Aveda color instructor, the spacious, industrial-chic salon has eight cutting stations—featuring sleek, responsibly harvested wood Takara Belmont chairs—and eight for color (two of the color chairs are in a separate, ventilated room). Only ammonia-free color is applied, and products from emerging organic hair-care companies such as Original Sprout, vegan Organic Color Systems, and natural Colour Herbe are exclusively used. No chemicals are sprayed in the salon area; for bridal parties and other procedures that require hairspray, stylists utilize the secluded Fume Room.
