Top celebrity and editorial manicurist Jin Soon Choi offers a welcome alternative to the city’s many in-and-out nail shops with her unique Hand and Foot Spas. The three locations are relatively tiny—just a waxing room and a few nail stations—but that’s part of the charm; somehow, clients never feel rushed or crowded. At the front of each spa, small custom-made tables serve as manicure stations. Behind these, an undulating curtain or series of screens hides the waxing room. In the pedicure area, large cushions and satin throw pillows form comfy chairs that sit above elegant, round foot basins. All pedicures include a foot soak with your choice of essential oil—lavender, rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, grapefruit—and an invigorating foot and calf massage. Upping the indulgence factor, the Breath of Milk and Honey pedicure submerges feet in hot milk and honey, and the Spirit of the Beehive manicure hydrates hands with a three-layer paraffin wrap. The staff is trained by the owner herself to use methods like applying nail polish from left to right (as opposed to starting in the center and working out to either side) for a smoother, more even finish. Featuring OPI, Essie, MAC, Givenchy, Nars, and Elizabeth Arden, the polish selection is enormous. — Amanda Theunissen
My friend and I went to Jin Soon on the west side for milk and honey manicures ($25)and pedicures ($50). Despite our appointments, we had a fairly long wait since they only have 4 pedicure chairs. Although the milk and honey is a cute pampering idea, it wasn't anything special. After spending a long time drying, my pedicure mushed. In addition, my nails are filed so unevenly, I am going to go to my usual local place to have them redone. They also had a small selection of nail polishes. The dryers they use were very hot and did not dry the polish. I felt guilty that I picked this place and wasted 2 1/2 hours of my friend's visit. I had heard such great things about this salon but I was completely underwhelmed.
If angels gave pedicures they would work at Jin Soon! Jin Soon's is the place for manicures and pedicures for those of us who like to enjoy the entire experience. Going to Jin's is not like maintenance it's like a short vacation. My fav's are the Balm of Purity and Breath of Milk and Honey. I've been going to Jin for 3 years and I won't let anyone else touch my hands or feet. After you experience Jin Soon neither will you. And you must try the citron tea during your pedicure. That alone will make you want to become a regular customer so you can get your own little bag of pedicure tools set that are used just for you at each appointment. Regularity does have it's privileges.
